6 Tips to Protect Your Philly Home While on Vacation
7/20/2023 (Permalink)
Many people go on vacations during the summer months, leaving their properties unattended. SERVPRO is the #1 choice in restoration services to property owners, property managers, and vacation rental agencies. The need for routine inspections, maintenance, and restoration is very important to prevent any potential damage while the properties are vacant.
Here are some tips to make sure your property is taken care of while you’re relaxing!
- Secure doors and windows: Before leaving, double-check that all doors, windows, and entry points are securely locked. You don’t want water to make its way uninvited.
- Inform trustworthy neighbors or friends about your vacation plans. Provide them with your contact information and ask them to keep an eye on your property.
- Maintain your property's exterior: Before leaving, ensure that your property's exterior is well-maintained. Trim trees and bushes, mow the lawn, and remove any potential hazards or debris that could cause damage during your absence.
- Unplug non-essential appliances: To prevent electrical fires or power surges, unplug non-essential appliances, such as computers, TVs, and kitchen appliances. This also helps conserve energy while you're away.
- Check water sources: Turn off the main water supply or shut off individual water valves to prevent leaks or flooding. Consider installing leak detection devices that can alert you to any water leaks or pipe bursts.
- IF EMERGENCY OCCURS: Inform your security company and emergency contacts, such as SERVPRO of Langhorne/Bensalem. We are available 24/7.
Vacation is supposed to be a relaxing getaway from reality. Performing these tips and tricks will help your family have a stress-free trip!

An overhead of the pentagon
Following the events of September 11, 2001, SERVPRO Franchise Professionals were called in to assist with cleanup and restoration of the Pentagon. As everyone can remember, it was a difficult, emotional, and uneasy time to travel, or simply go to work. In spite of the emotions and difficulties involved in the restoration effort, SERVPRO Franchise Professionals dried nearly 300,000 square feet in addition to providing fire, soot and smoke cleanup and restoration services. Upon compeltion of the drying assignment, SERVPRO Franchise Professionals provided mold remediation services in other sections of the facility. Despite the size of the project, the emotional sensitivity of those involved at the time, and other unique aspects of the project, SERVPRO Frachise Professionals met the challenge and completed the project in just 90 days.

Holiday Weekend

After leaving a property vacant for a few days, the property owner returned to find this unfortunate mess.
With the holiday weekend upon us, many people will be heading to the beach for one last summer weekend! However, if a water damage were to occur while the house is unoccupied, you could be coming home to a disaster!
As a tip, you should consider shutting off the main valve that controls all the water for your home in order to protect against catastrophic water damage. Everyone in your home should know where the main water shutoff valve is located so they can stop the water in an emergency. And you should turn it off whenever you leave home, even overnight.
If you forget to shut off the main water valve, and you do walk into a water damage, here are just a few tips of what to do:
- Shut off the source of water if possible
- Turn off circuit breakers for areas of the building if possible
- Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping or extracting
We hope everyone enjoys the unofficial "end of the summer" holiday weekend! Should you or someone you know need help with a water damage, SERVPRO of Fox Chase/Torresdale professionals will be available to help 24/7!
